Description. The aim of this report is to review and evaluate the accumulated experience in the use of bituminization techniques for the immobilization of radioactive wastes, including the description of incidents which have happened at bituminization facilities, and to give an assessment on the role of bituminization processes in the strategy for radioactive waste management. VIII. CONCLUSIONS The bitumen embedding of low- and medium-level radioactive wastes has reached the industrial stage. Bituminization plants are operating satisfactorily in France and throughout the world. However, bituminization presents certain risks due to the nature of bitumen itself. Key parameters in classification scheme are the radionuclide concentrations and half-lives. Radioactive waste is generally classified by activity level into exempt, low-level waste (LLW), intermediate-level waste (ILW) and high-level waste (HLW). Often LILW is used to mean low and intermediate level wastes.
